A former Primary Care Macmillan Cancer Nurse and a small group of volunteers with personal experience of cancer first started the group in August 2003. Since then it has been developed as a joint partnership venture between Macmillan Cancer Support, Haringey Council, Haringey Teaching Primary Care NHS Trust and Somerset Gardens Volunteers Cancer Support Group (SGV).
The service was set up as there was no cancer support service in the community and patients had to travel out of the borough of Haringey to receive support.
The aims of SGV Cancer Support are:
- To make a difference to people affected by cancer
- To aid the promotion of good health by raising cancer awareness
Closure Announcement
We regret to inform you that after careful consideration, we have made a difficult decision to close SGV Cancer Support after 20 years of service.
This will take effect from 23/07/2024.
This is due to the declining demand for our service. Despite of our tireless efforts to meet the needs of the community, changing circumstances have led to this unfortunate outcome.
We are extremely grateful for all your support and kindness over the years which has been invaluable in making a significant difference to people affected by cancer in Haringey and its neighbouring boroughs.
Your contributions have enabled us to run a weekly Drop-in, provide wellbeing activities, support and advice. A weekly haven for people affected by cancer who were able to meet and share their cancer experiences.
